What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not an accidental word, an intrusive thought or a sin over which someone sincerely repents. In Matthew 12, Jesus speaks about the deliberate and persistent rejection of the Holy Spirit’s clear testimony to Christ.
What happens in Matthew 12?
Jesus heals a man who was blind and mute because of demonic oppression. The crowd sees the miracle and asks whether Jesus might be the promised Messiah, the Son of David. The Pharisees also see what happened, yet instead of acknowledging God’s work they claim that Christ casts out demons by Satan’s power.
“But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”Matthew 12:28
Their error is not caused by a lack of evidence. God’s work stands plainly before them, and they deliberately call it satanic. Mark explains Jesus’ warning with the words, “for they were saying, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’”
Why is this sin not forgiven?
It is not because Christ’s sacrifice is insufficient for a particular sin. Everyone who turns to Christ in repentance and faith receives forgiveness. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable because a person persistently rejects the One who reveals the truth about Christ and leads them to repentance.
The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ, convicts people of sin and shows them their need of a Saviour. When someone finally hardens their heart against this witness, they do not seek forgiveness but reject its only source.
Can this sin be committed today?
Some interpreters believe that, in its narrowest sense, the blasphemy was connected with Pharisees who personally witnessed Christ’s miracles and attributed them to Satan. Others also see a wider warning against a final, conscious rejection of the Spirit’s witness. In both cases, the central point is the same: the danger is not an accidental word but a hardened heart that persistently rejects Christ.
What if I fear that I have committed it?
If you grieve over your sin, desire God’s forgiveness and want to return to Christ, that shows you are not in the condition Jesus describes. A hardened person is not troubled about rejecting Christ and does not seek His mercy.
Do not keep staring at your fears. Look to the promise of the gospel. Confess your sin and trust Christ. He never rejects anyone who comes to Him in faith.
