Why pray if God already knows everything?

We do not pray to tell God something He does not know. We pray because He is our Father, because He commands us to come to Him and because He has chosen to work in our lives through prayer.

“Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”Matthew 6:8

Prayer is fellowship with God

A child does not speak to his father only when he needs something. He speaks because there is a relationship between them. In the same way, prayer is fellowship with our heavenly Father. In prayer we worship, give thanks, confess sin, share our fears and ask for help.

Jesus says the Father already knows what we need, and immediately afterwards teaches His disciples how to pray. God’s knowledge does not make prayer unnecessary. It gives us confidence that we speak with the God who knows us fully and cares for us.

God commands us to pray

Christ prayed. The apostles prayed. The early church devoted itself to prayer. God calls us to pray at all times, bring our needs before Him and not give up. Prayer is both privilege and obedience.

God appoints both the end and the means

God’s plan includes not only what will happen but how it will happen. God provides daily bread through work, spiritual growth through His Word, and many answers through the prayers of believers. Our prayers are not outside God’s providence; they are part of it.

Prayer therefore has real meaning. It does not change God’s character or introduce Him to a new idea, but God truly hears and answers. The sovereign God has chosen to accomplish many things in response to the prayers of His people.

We pray according to God’s will

Prayer is not a way of forcing God to perform our will. We come boldly but humbly, saying with Christ, “Not my will, but yours, be done.” God may answer yes, no or wait. In every case He remains good and wise.

Prayer changes us too

As we pray, God exposes wrong desires, teaches us dependence and directs our hearts towards His will. Prayer is not control over God; it is trust in Him.

God’s sovereignty does not make prayer meaningless. It is the reason we pray with hope. We pray because God knows, God can, God hears and God acts.
