How can we recognise false teachers?

A false teacher rarely looks dangerous at first. Jesus says false prophets come “in sheep’s clothing”. They may speak persuasively, use biblical language and attract many followers. We must therefore look beyond appearance, popularity or impressive claims.

“Thus you will recognise them by their fruits.”Matthew 7:20

Test what they teach about Christ

The most important question is who Jesus is according to this teacher. Scripture bears witness that Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man, that He died for our sins, rose bodily and is the only way of salvation. Teaching that diminishes Christ’s person or work is not a minor error.

Also test how salvation is presented. The gospel teaches that sinners are justified by grace through faith because of Christ. Salvation cannot be bought with donations, earned by merit or made dependent on unconditional obedience to a particular leader.

Test the teaching by the whole of Scripture

False teaching often begins with a true verse removed from its context. Read what comes before and after. Compare the claim with the clear teaching of the whole Bible. One verse must never be used in a way that contradicts the rest of God’s Word.

The Bereans did not accept Paul’s words without examination; they searched the Scriptures daily. If apostolic teaching was tested, no modern preacher should demand unquestioning trust.

Examine the life and fruit

Giftedness is not the same as character. Someone may speak well, gather crowds and claim miracles while their life shows no obedience to Christ. The New Testament places great emphasis on a leader’s character: faithfulness, sobriety, self-control, humility and a good reputation.

Look at lasting fruit. Persistent greed, sexual sin, manipulation through fear, a personality cult and refusal of accountability are serious warning signs. A true servant directs people to Christ rather than making them dependent on himself.

Miracles are not sufficient proof

The Bible warns that signs alone do not prove someone has been sent by God. Jesus says that some will appeal to prophecies and miracles, yet He will answer, “I never knew you.” Every experience must be tested by the truth of God’s Word and the fruit it produces.

Not every error makes someone a false teacher

Every teacher can make mistakes, and sincere believers may disagree on secondary matters. A false teacher is someone who persistently distorts central truths of the faith, refuses biblical correction and leads people away from Christ.

Biblical discernment does not mean suspecting everyone. It means loving Christ, the truth and His flock enough not to replace Scripture with giftedness, popularity or promises of earthly success.
